Love hardcore bands .. from the 80's and 90's ...

When I first heard NOFX.. I couldn't believe it.. man !! they were playing like Metallica with Queen backing vocals.. and not pretending to be bigger-than-life ... real punk rock attitude..

Saw them live when they released Punk in Drublic .... that record was great.. the only problem is that their three previous releases were even better.. Ribbed, White Trash, Two heebs and a bean and the EP The Longest Line, where this song, obviously, is found.

Now they are coming to Barcelona to play next Tuesday and my good mate Luis bought tickets to go..

So I am back again playing air drums while listening to this old stuff..

SoundGarden was one of those bands that I would really would have loved seeing back in the day when they release their first albums..

Unfortunately they didn't come to Spain until their 1996 album which I actually never heard.. as I was into other stuff in that days..

Anyway as they appear in Guitar World cover I wanted to remember one of their most kicking ass tunes..

Basically what Sabbath or Zeppelin could have done in the 90's...

The Stone Roses had a great success with their first album...

Then they got into legal issues with their record company and didn't release their second until 5 years ..

The 1st single of that 2nd album was this loose-bad-ass-zeppelinesque tune... called Love Spreads...

Everybody was expecting them to come again with the dance oriented shoe-gazing rock they were known for..

But instead John Squire decided to show the world how a Les Paul should be played ...

This is one of the songs that will push you to buy a guitar..

Svefn-g-englar

Not so long ago I realized that my alarm tone was such an annoying and disturbing thing... I just linked it with the fact of waking up.. and didn't care too much..

The thing is that it was the worst sound ever...

So I firmly resolved to change it, and started to search in my cellphone for some less aggressive and hostile melodies..

Checking there I arrived to a Svefn-G-Englar by Sigur Rós ... A song which had been there for no more than a week or two...

Since then waking up is another experience… it’s like being in heaven or in the middle of an open field.. that’s the first thing I think of now… every morning.

…Things happen for some reason and Svefn-G-Englar, casually means Sleep Angels in Icelandic.

It would be great if each person could take 10 minutes away from their daily obligations.. and give a present to themselves by listening to this piece...

In Q's issue of August different artists choose their top ten songs of the moment..

I was checking Bruce Springsteen's list and he mentions a song by Ron Sexsmith..

Even his name is familiar, I never found the moment to listen to him...

So I went to his first record which had the following critic ..

"Ron Sexsmith is so anti-cool that this may actually be one the coolest albums you hear"

Secret Heart reminds me a bit of Roy Orbison's fragility, and the musical logical sense of Brian Wilson and McCartney..

Regarding the question he throws.. We are afraid of rejection and feeling small .. I guess he already knows..

My favorite band member from Faith No More is Jim Martin..

the only guitar player I have seen who looked like out from a Freak Brothers comic book...

So bad they sacked him.. after that, FNM didn't get my interest at all, even he didn't contribute too much on his last record with them...

They were so original...

Which other alternative band would dare covering a Leonard Ritchie song ??

Chemistry in rock bands is 90 % percent of success..

And Pearl Jam, had that when they released Ten..

Just listening to this song, and trying to imagine when they were doing the club circuit in Seattle, I can see how any A&R around knew they could become as big as they are..

Though I believe they said it all with that 1st record.. which doesn't diminished they great talent.

I remember when The Bends came out..

We were freaked out with it..

The first single was My Iron Lung .. which was even better than Creep..

And then the two slow songs.. High and Dry and Fake Plastic Trees...
So bad, RADIOHEAD don't play this songs anymore...

And he came with this easy going vibe of whitey boy rapping ...

I was searching some cool bass lines and remembered this tune, Beercan.. lyrics a bit non-sense and silly but, hey, music is supposed to be fun ...

Because if it's not fun you are not doing it right !!

...And he remembers Roxy Music in 72

"If You're Feeling Sinister" was released in 1997 and it's the second record by Belle And Sebastian

It was considered a gem at the time of its release.
Basically because contains four songs in a row which makes it excellent.

Me and The Major, Like Dylan in the Movies, The Fox In The Snow and Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying.

All of them are modern classics.

This record is a pop masterpiece that could be stored among Rubber Soul and Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

I will always love Like Dylan in the Movies, because it was the first song that caught me from them..

But the funny lyrics and the harmonica of Me and The Major, the pumping rhythm, the references to the punks and the hippies that ends up mentioning Roxy Music.. always make me laugh..

...But he knows not what it means

Nirvana wrote quite a bunch of songs which now are part of the best music done in the last 20 years.. Don't know exactly why but my song is "In Bloom"..

Probably Kurt would hate it, but I can sing along to this chorus for hours..

The way Dave Grohl plays here is fantastic.. he just can't play with MORE energy..

And Novoselic grooving in the back .. fitting perfectly..

They had that chemistry that can make you go wherever you want..

How great they were .. How good this record was ..

But the best of all is how three guys from nowhere changed the whole music scene with four chords...

.. but all I know is you got no money

But that's got nothing to do with a good time

The picture above is from a year after Appetite Of Destruction came out.. then they signed with the same record label... got to love eclecticism...

It strikes me the look of Steve Shelley, far right.. it must be from the least pretentious musician in the world..

What if a band like Sonic Youth would appear again.. ??

Born on that extremely inspirational years of 1979 / 1980 .. Once punk had given a kick in the ass to the whole musical panorama..

They had their own language.. And Thurston Moore is probably the coolest guy on the planet.. after he came, with that nerdy grungy look.. the whole 90's happened..

Another good reason to respect the 80's..

How many times have you heard someone say ..

When I had in my hands what was going to be Jeff Buckley's second album.. I was shocked by "Satisfied Mind", by the way he plays the guitar, the way he sings.. and the way he clears his throat...

He’s the last man in the line of the singing tradition that started with Robert Johnson and continued with Nick Drake, though there's a lot in between them... known and unknown..

Poor Jeff.. such a tragic end he was bound to found..

But I am happy to hear him sing ..
“… one thing's for certain when it comes my time,
I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind mind mind, mind mind,…”

Which are priceless words …
